Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25: The defining moment
While Shedge had been quietly making his mark in domestic cricket, it was during the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 final that the cricketing world took serious notice of him. In a thrilling match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Mumbai found themselves in a tense chase against Madhya Pradesh. With the game hanging in the balance, it was Shedge who stepped up and delivered a match-winning performance that will be remembered for years to come.
Coming in at a critical juncture in the chase, Shedge walked in to face a nervy situation. What followed was nothing short of explosive. He smashed an unbeaten 36 off just 15 balls at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 240. The knock, laced with three sixes and as many boundaries, guided Mumbai to a thrilling win and their second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title.
“I was told beforehand that this would be my role. I would be batting at 5 or 6. So coming into this tournament, I tweaked my practice sessions a bit. I was playing 6-ball sets, trying to score a certain amount of runs in those 6 balls. That kind of helps,” Shedge explained in an interview after the final. His approach to the game—practising for the exact situations he would face on the field—reflected his maturity and understanding of the game, despite his young age.
Joining Punjab Kings
With his growing stature in domestic cricket, it wasn’t long before IPL franchises took note of Suryansh Shedge. The IPL 2025 mega auction held in Jeddah saw Punjab Kings snapping up the young all-rounder for his base price of INR 30 lakh. The franchise, known for nurturing young talent, will offer Shedge a unique platform to hone his skills further under the tutelage of seasoned cricketers and expert coaches.
The opportunity to play alongside established stars in the IPL is a big step for Shedge. While he has already showcased his flair for the game in domestic cricket, the IPL will offer him exposure to high-pressure situations, where the stakes are higher and the competition stiffer. This could very well be the platform that transforms him from a domestic star into a national sensation.
