Key Takeaways from PBKS vs GT, Match 37, IPL 2024 – Winning team (GT)

Spinners run through Punjab’s batting line-up

Gujarat spinners deserve the credit for bowling out Punjab for 142. Gujarat bowled 13 overs of spin, conceding 75 runs and taking 7 wickets at an economy rate of 5.7. The most successful spinner for Gujarat was R Sai Kishore who took 4/33. But it was Rashid Khan’s 1/15 in four overs that put the brakes on the scoring in the middle overs. He was ably supported by his Afghanistan teammate Noor Ahmad who took 2/20. Kishore was a tad expensive, and conceded a six off the first ball he bowled but came back strongly to take four wickets, and never allowed Punjab to gain any momentum. Overall, it was a top-class performance from Gujarat spinners.

Lack of contribution from top-order is hurting Punjab (Images: ©BCCI/IPLT20)

Top-order fails again

The opening pair of Sam Curran and Prabhsimrah Singh posted a stand of 52 runs in 5.3 overs, but they could not build up the momentum as Gujarat spinners took regular wickets. The openers failed to carry on from the start they received and Punjab lost the momentum. The batters to follow could not deliver as Punjab was soon reduced to 99/7.

Once again, the job of resurrecting the innings fell into the middle-lower order who took the team’s total to 142. Punjab need a top-order batter to bat through the innings while the rest play around him. But the consistent failure of the top order is not allowing Punjab to build up a good score to defend. The absence of Shikhar Dhawan at the top is also hurting them.
