An India versus Pakistan match is played with passion, watched with reverence and is a different ballgame altogether. The El Clasico of cricket is scheduled to happen today, in the Asia Cup 2023 group stage.

The past three decades of encounters between the two sides on the cricket field have been filled with intense competitions between India’s legendary batting order and Pakistan’s outstanding bowling attack. However, the game has evolved today, along with the players and the nations.

Though Pakistan still remains an outstanding bowling unit, India have nurtured menacing fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami and Mohammad Siraj. Also, while India’s batters continue to dominate, Pakistan’s batting has also become prominent with the emergence of Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman and Imam ul-Haq.

Therefore, today’s contest will also be judged on the parameters of two fiery fast bowlers going head-to-head on the 22 yards. Yes, we are talking about the spearheads of the two countries’ bowling line-ups – Jasprit Bumrah for India and Shaheen Shah Afridi for Pakistan.

So, here’s how the two pacers have fared so far, especially in the ODI format of the game, and more insights into where they have proved to be more efficient.

Deep-dive into their ODI performances of Shaheen and Bumrah

Let us start off with how the leaders of the pack fare off in ODI’s as a whole.

Crunching the ICC ODI events numbers of Shaheen and Bumrah

Every player’s greatness at the end of their careers boils down to their performance in ICC tournaments. In ICC events, Afridi seems to be ahead in the number of wickets taken and he has done it with a better average than Bumrah’s. The stats are as follows:

PlayerSpanInningsWktBBIAvgEcoSR4w
Shaheen Afridi2019-202218386-3522.815.3625.52
Jasprit Bumrah2017-202017264-5529.844.9935.81
The knock-out pressure: Numbers in tournament semi-finals/finals

The difference between the two bowling wizards is the number of times their teams have reached the tournament’s final/semifinals in ODI cricket. The Indian pacer has played in four such knock-out matches and has picked four wickets.

The numbers don’t seem to be doing justice to Bumrah in knockout games, as he has an average of 66.5 and strike rate of 72.5 in knock out games.

The only solace is that the Pakistan’s ace pacer is yet to feature in an ODI knock-out game for Pakistan ever since his debut.

Whom do they like bowling to? Left-handers or Right Handers

The numbers are very contrasting for both the players. While one might have assumed that the tall left-arm pacer with a beautiful in-swinger to the right handers would have better numbers against right handers compared to left handers and Jasprit Bumrah with his action and the ability to bring the ball back into the left-handers would be successful against them, the results paint a completely different picture.
