IPL 2025: Ricky Ponting joins Punjab Kings as Head Coach. What are the expectations from the coach and challenges ahead of Ponting?
For 17 seasons, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) have struggled in the Indian Premier League (IPL), securing no trophies and making it to the finals only once. It is fair to suggest that they have been one of the most underwhelming teams in IPL history. Their last playoff appearance was in 2014, and since then, they have cycled through six coaches in just seven years without yielding positive outcomes.
Despite this disheartening history, fans of PBKS are feeling a renewed sense of hope. As the IPL 2025 season approaches, the franchise has appointed Ricky Ponting, one of cricket’s finest, as their new head coach. Ponting’s arrival comes shortly after he parted ways with the Delhi Capitals (DC), having held the position of head coach there. His four-year contract with PBKS signals a potential turning point for the franchise.
Proven coaching background
Ricky Ponting brings a wealth of experience and stability that PBKS desperately need. His coaching credentials are impressive as well. He was part of the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) coaching staff when they won the title in 2013 and 2015. Although he started as a player in 2013, he shifted to the support staff as his batting form declined. By 2015, he had claimed his first IPL title as head coach, effectively building a team rich in local talent.
His coaching philosophy continued to shine during his tenure with the Delhi Capitals, where he joined in 2018. Under his leadership, the Capitals saw significant improvement, becoming a competitive side packed with powerful players like Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Shikhar Dhawan. Ponting’s strategy has always emphasised nurturing home-grown talent, a principle he will likely carry over to the Punjab Kings.
Additionally, in February 2024, Ponting took on the role of head coach for the Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket, leading them to a championship in their second season. This success further underscores his capability to build winning teams.

Expectations from Ricky Ponting
As the IPL 2025 mega auction approaches, likely in late November 2024, Ponting’s primary responsibility will be to construct a well-rounded squad capable of competing at the highest level. The Kings have historically struggled with consistency, often relying on individual performances rather than a cohesive team effort. A key focus will be fortifying the middle order, which has been a persistent weakness. Despite a roster that boasts names like Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow, the batting line-up has often lacked stability.
Moreover, enhancing the bowling attack is vital for success in the IPL. Ponting will aim to create a diverse bowling line-up that blends pace and spin, ideally led by South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada. The right mix of bowlers is crucial, especially in a league where matches can pivot on a single over.
Another area Ponting must address is the franchise’s ongoing captaincy carousel. Throughout 17 IPL seasons, PBKS has utilised 15 different captains, failing to stick with one leader for consecutive seasons. Ponting’s extensive experience as a captain himself will be instrumental in identifying a leader who can unite and motivate the team.

Cultivating winning spirit
Beyond team composition, Ponting will focus on instilling a winning mentality among the players. Historically, PBKS have shown strong starts in matches but often faltered in crucial moments, lacking the resilience and determination to see games through. Ponting, who led Australia during one of its most dominant eras, understands the importance of this mindset. His ability to inspire a competitive spirit will be critical.
One of Ponting’s less frequently acknowledged strengths is his skill in creating team culture. His departure from the Capitals was marked by heartfelt tributes from players, signalling his impact on the team’s environment. At Punjab, cultivating a positive and resilient culture will be vital. Ponting has a proven track record of identifying and nurturing young talent. Given PBKS’s blend of experienced and emerging players, his mentorship will be invaluable.
New era with Ponting at the helm
“Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was ‘Project Punjab’ that attracted me. This is a team that haven’t had a lot of success over a long period, a team that’s changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge. I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings, and hopefully we can attract them back for this season and put together a team that is good enough to win the IPL,” said Ponting in an interview.
Ponting’s arrival at PBKS is not just about a change in coaching staff; it represents a potential paradigm shift for the franchise. His extensive experience, both as a player and coach, equips him with the tools necessary to tackle the challenges ahead. The Punjab Kings have a storied history filled with promise that has yet to be fulfilled. With Ponting at the helm, there is a sense of optimism that the franchise can finally realise its potential and deliver the success that its loyal fanbase has long awaited.
