IPL 2024, GT vs CSK, Key Takeaways: Centuries from Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Mohit Sharma’s 3-41 derail CSK’s playoff plans. Top takeaways for CSK and Gujarat Titans from the match.
Brief Scores:Â GT 231/3 (Shubman Gill 104, Sai Sudharsan 103, Tushar Deshpande 2/33) beat CSK 196/8 (Daryl Mitchell 63, Moeen Ali 56, Mohit Sharma 3/31) by 35 runs.
Player of the Match:Â Shubman Gill – 104 (55)
Tenth placed Gujarat Titans (GT) took on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at home in a clash that had the potential to determine the fate of more than one team in IPL 2024.
The Titans continued to stay in the playoffs hunt with a comprehensive win, courtesy of magnificent tons from openers Shubman Gill & Sai Sudharsan. Their 210-run stand and a poor bowling effort by CSK led to GT walloping 231 after being inserted into batting first.
Despite fighting half-centuries from CSK’s overseas stars Moeen Ali and Daryl Mitchell, 232 was always a steep chase for the visitors. Especially after their torrid beginning with the bat. This is their fourth loss in their last six games and it strengthens the fact that the Super Kings are losing the plot in the second half of the season.
Key Takeaways from GT vs CSK, Match 59, Winning Team (GT)
Shubman Gill finally comes to party
The former champions have had a lacklustre outing in this IPL and one of the reasons was the indifferent form of their skipper Shubman Gill at the top of batting order. In his last five innings, the GT opener scored just 67 runs with 35 being his highest. His overall aggregate read 322 from 11 knocks.
Lack of runs has not only dented his own confidence but also affected the Titans’ progress. They lost four of these games that are in question, which is why this 104 against CSK is all the more important. It not only snapped GT’s losing-streak but also will do the confidence of Gill a lot good.
This is an exhibition from two batters who make their profession seem very easy. The word "elegant" slips easily off the tongue. It has been a delight to watch Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan.

Key Takeaways from GT vs CSK, Match 59, Losing Team (CSK)
Bowling injuries hurt CSKÂ
CSK’s bowling was never the team’s strong suit in this IPL and it got further depleted with their main fast bowling trio missing. Matheesha Pathirana, who was their best bowler in terms of impact, had to withdraw due to a hamstring injury. Mustafizur Rahman, the joint highest wicket-taker for the team with 14 scalps had to return due to international duty and their India pace spearhead Deepak Chahar is also out with injury.
This leaves them with a weak pace attack. In a belter of a track, their spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Mitchell Santner went for a combined 60 runs in four overs while their sixth bowler for the evening Daryl Mitchell gave away 52 in his four. Adding to the woes, last match’s hero Simarjeet Singh (0/60) also proved to be expensive. It was only due to Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande’s efforts that CSK didn’t concede more than 231 runs.

Mitchell & Ali’s return among the runs
Chasing a mammoth 232, CSK would have hoped to be in a better position than getting reduced to 10/3 inside three over with their skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad going out for a duck. However, a positive CSK could get out from a largely forgettable evening are the batting returns of Moeen Ali and Daryl Mitchell.
The overseas pair stitched 119 runs for the fourth wicket and this was the highest partnership for CSK this season. Both of these players hit their respective milestones and their form could be crucial for the team in coming games.

With this result, three teams namely Delhi Capitals (DC), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are tied at 12 points. The men in yellow will go back home to take-on Rajasthan Royals (RR) on May 12 while GT face the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) a day later at Ahmedabad.
Up next, table toppers KKR will be facing the Mumbai Indians (MI) in game 60 of IPL 2024 at the Eden Gardens.
Poor outing for CSK. Dropped catches, bowling lacked sting and discipline, had a disastrous batting powerplay which robbed them of any chance of winning. Still in contention for place in play-off but not unless they rise above current mediocre form
