After 64 matches and seven weeks, Mumbai Indians (MI) clashed with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the first time in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday. In head-to-head matches, Mumbai are slightly ahead having won 10, while Sunrisers have got the better of them on eight occasions prior to Tuesday’s game.
At the Wankhede Stadium, SRH have played MI five times having won just once, whereas Mumbai have delivered the knockout punch on four occasions.
Having won the toss, Mumbai Indians decided to bat first. To test the waters of their squad for next season, Mumbai made a like for like replacement, bringing in Mayank Markande and Sanjay Yadav who made his debut for Mumbai Indians. Whereas, SRH brought back Fazalhaq Farooqi and Priyam Garg into the eleven.
SRH win by 3 runs but still have negative NRR of -0.230
As net run rate was touted to play big role in Tuesday’s match, the SRH fans binged this match with calculators in their hands instead of the TV remote. Looking to post a big total, SRH lost their in-form opener, Abhishek Sharma, in the third over the innings.
At the end of the third over, SRH were 23-1 and needed a big and quick partnership to turn things around. The duo of Rahul Tripathi and Priyam Garg stitched a quickfire 43-balls 78 run stand to change the momentum in SRH’s favour. After Ramandeep dismissed Garg with a ferocious caught and bowled scalp, Nicholas Pooran walked in with SRH at 96/2 at the end of the 10th over, with an aim to step another foot on the gas and go full-throttle. Tripathi added another rapidfire 76 runs with Nicholas Pooran off just 42 deliveries. It looked as if SRH were well on track to put 200+ on the board till Ramandeep Singh bowled a brilliant double-wicket two-run 18th over and SRH were reduced to 193/6 at the end of 20 overs.
It was a perfect start to this mammoth run chase by the Mumbai openers as Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan demolished the SRH bowlers in the powerplay, scoring 51 off the first six overs. Rohit who had failed to score 30+ in consecutive innings before this match scored his highest score (48) of this season. Washington was experimental in dismissing his bunny Rohit for the third time in six innings.
Mumbai’s innings started losing momentum after Rohit’s wicket and that opened the door for wickets for SRH as the required run rate was soaring above 12. Umran’s three wickets in two overs brought SRH right back in the game.
The game was changing fortunes like a baby on a swing, with 71 needed off the last six overs. Tim David’s innings of 46 off only 18 balls almost brought Mumbai into the game till Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s maiden wicket 19th over. Twists and turns galore in the second half of the chase and SRH prevailed in the end to snap their five-match losing streak.

Tripathi punishes Mumbai with a 44-ball 76
Walking in to bat after the fall of the first wicket in the third over of the innings, Rahul Tripathi looked determined from the word go. The resolute Tripathi took on the best T20 bowler, Jasprit Bumrah for 14 runs, smashing him for two consecutive boundaries and one massive six over deep mid-wicket.
Tripathi was in the mood and the pocket dynamo didn’t let Mumbai’s bowlers settle in as from Bumrah to Meredith to young Sanjay Yadav, all were taken to the cleaners by some clean hitting from Tripathi. It would be safe to call Tripathi as “ThreePathi” as he brought up his third fifty of the season batting at number three.
In the blink of an eye, Rahul had scored a whirlwind 32-ball 50. Apart from Tripathi, only three other players have scored two or more fifties batting at number three this season. Rahul wasn’t out of juice just yet, as he smacked 16 runs in the 15th over bowled by Daniel Sams. The highlight of this innings was Tripathi hitting sixes with a straight bat, which is a sight to behold. Tripathi’s 76 was also the highest score by an SRH batter this season, surpassing Abhishek’s 75 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Tim David’s hat-trick of sixes and a nerve-wracking 18-ball 46 goes in vain
Needing 71 runs off the final six overs, Mumbai’s successor of Kieron Pollard, Tim David was to be tested on Tuesday. David was taking a liking to the yorker king, Thangarasu Natarajan from the very start, scoring 12 runs off the 16th over and starting to shift the momentum towards Mumbai.
The five-times IPL champions still needed 45 runs off the final three overs with David on strike; Natarajan was on his bowling mark, unaware of what is to come. Something, that we have never seen against Natarajan. And as they say, cricket is a funny game, the death overs specialist was absolutely tarnished in the 18th over. Starting the over with a wide yorker outside off, Natarajan gave a clue of what’s to come. The second ball was an attempted yorker turned low full-toss which David smartly sliced over the cover boundaries.
Changing his plan, Nattu bowled a wide yorker, but this time it was down the leg side. Aiming for David’s pad, Natarajan bowled another full-toss on the legs but David dispatched it over the square leg boundary. Natarajan was clearly under pressure and missed his yorker again on the fourth delivery and almost produced a copy-paste of the last ball directed on the pads, and David just helped it over square leg.
What came next was the second biggest six of the tournaments, a sweating Natarajan, crumbled under pressure and bowled the third full-toss in a row and David absolutely smoked the leather of the cricket ball, dispatching that white cricket ball for a 114 metre humongous six. David’s power-hitting had certainly changed the yorker king into a full-toss king which almost won the game for Mumbai with 26 runs of the 18th over.
David committed a suicidal runout trying to take a non-existent single off the last ball of the 18th over in an attempt to keep strike for the penultimate over. Even if David had let the last ball go as a dot ball, with just 19 more needed off 12 balls and him batting at a strike rate of over 200, it was definitely a brain fade moment from David.

Umran terrorises Mumbai batters with a 3-fer
As it has been the case with Umran Malik, Kane Williamson brought the speed gun after the first powerplay. Umran had the worst possible start to his spell, bowling a no-ball on his very first delivery. Bowling the free-hit delivery to Rohit, the under-pressure Umran bowled a wide and the free-hit continued and Umran struggled to bowl a legal delivery till the fourth delivery.
After being smashed for 17 runs in his first over, it seemed like it wasn’t Malik’s day with the ball. But the gutsy bowler, doesn’t have the word ‘give-up’ in his dictionary. Coming into his second over, Umran from round the wicket, targeted Ishan Kishan with a well-directed 145 kmph sharp bouncer, which resulted in Kishan’s wicket.
Kane Williamson again called Umran to deliver a wicket-taking spell, and Umran delivered one better, taking a double wicket over, dismissing Tilak Varma and Daniel Sams in the same over while giving just four runs when the required run rate was above 12.
With these three wickets, Umran has now become the second-highest wicket-taker (16) in overs 7-15, with Wanindu Hasaranga leading the chart with 17 scalps. Umran’s impactful spell of 3-23 not only put the brakes on the scoring rate of Mumbai but also dismantled their weak middle-order.
