Player of the Match: Jasprit Bumrah for his rattling spell of 5/10

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who were placed at the 9th position in Indian Premier League (IPL) points table were at odds with bottom-ranked Mumbai Indians (MI).

If we see the head-to-head record between these two teams, Mumbai has quite an upper hand with 22 wins among 30 encounters against Kolkata, whereas the latter have won the remaining eight games.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first. He included Punjab batter Ramandeep Singh in place of Suryakumar Yadav, who was ruled out of IPL 2022 due to sustaining an injury to his left forearm.

Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders made many changes in their playing eleven from the previous game. They included Ajinkya Rahane, pacer Pat Cummins, Venkatesh Iyer, spinner Varun Chakravarthy and wicketkeeper batter Sheldon Jackson in place of Baba Indrajith, Aaron Finch, Anukul Roy, Shivam Mavi and Harshit Rana.

Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians won the last two games, after eight straight losses in this edition of IPL. On the other hand, Kolkata lost six matches out of their previous seven games and they have to win every game of the remaining three games in this season of IPL to have a chance to qualify for playoffs. Thus, this match was a do or die game for Kolkata.

It proved to be a cakewalk for KKR as they overcame MI by 52 runs to go to 10 points.

Let’s gauge the top three performances of the game between KKR and MI.

Jasprit Bumrah’s first IPL fifer went in vain

Mumbai Indians’ leading seamer Jasprit Bumrah was not at the peak of his form in the first half of this season. However, at the business end of the tournament, Bumrah found his form.

In this encounter against KKR, Bumrah bowled his first over in powerplay and conceded only five runs. When KKR were well-placed on 136 for three in just 13 overs, captain Rohit brought Bumrah into the attack with the hope of a crucial breakthrough. Bumrah proved his captain right, by dismissing two in-form batters in an over. He removed explosive batter, Andre Russell, on a personal score of just nine. Before this game, Bumrah had dismissed Russell thrice in eight IPL games conceding only 56 runs off 42 balls.

In the same over, he banged a fiery short ball to put batter Nitish Rana in an awkward position leading to an easy catch to wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan.

Again, in the eighteenth over of the game, Bumrah used the short ball weapon to good effect to send back Sheldon Jackson to the dugout. He bowled sharp short balls towards the body of batters to put them in trouble. In the same over, he scalped the wicket of finisher Pat Cummins for a duck. He didn’t stop with two wickets in an over, he removed Sunil Narine for a duck in the same over. Bumrah bagged three wickets in an over without conceding a single run to complete his first IPL five-for.

The Bumrah show didn’t stop at a five-for as he returned to bowl the final over of the innings. He bowled accurate yorkers and fiery short balls to concede only a single run in the final over to record stupendous bowling figures of 5/10.

Pat Cummins bagged three wickets in a vital victory for KKR

Australia express seamer Pat Cummins made a comeback for KKR with match-winning bowling figures of 3/22. In his first over, Mumbai opener Ishan Kishan slapped two fours.

However, when Kishan completed his half-century and was looking to snatch the win from Kolkata, captain Shreyas Iyer brought Cummins into the attack, who has a notable upperhand against the left-hander in match-ups. On the first ball of the over, Cummins sent back Kishan. Kishan made 51 runs off 43 balls with the help of five fours and one six.

With this wicket, Cummins broke all hopes of the opponents as Kishan was the only batter who looked in fine touch today against KKR bowlers. Before this encounter, Kishan faced Cummins in only four IPL innings and got out three times by scoring just eight runs off nine balls. To top that, Cummins snared two more batters to finish every possible resistance of Mumbai Indians. Daniel Sams and Murugan Ashwin couldn’t face the ferocious bowling of Cummins and succumbed in single digits. Later, he bowled another economical over in the death overs to register match-winning figures of 3/22.

Venkatesh Iyer kicked off KKR innings in an explosive manner

KKR opener Venkatesh Iyer made a spectacular comeback on Monday, with big hits early in the innings. The southpaw fell out of Kolkata’s pecking order due to his series of low scores in the first half of this season. However, with his hard-hitting comeback, he played a pivotal role in this must-win match for Kolkata.

Iyer lambasted leg-spinner Murugan Ashwin for a towering six and a four in the second over of the innings. He clubbed another gigantic six off medium-pacer Daniel Sams in the next over. The Madhya Pradesh batter continued his attacking strokes to take benefit of field restrictions in the powerplay. The 27-year-old batter pummeled a six and boundary in an over of seamer Riley Meredith.

Venkatesh didn’t let pass any spinner without big hits; he smashed a boundary off newbie spinner Kumar Kartikeya, then followed it up with a huge six over deep mid-wicket. However, in the same over, Kartikeya bagged the wicket of Venkatesh. The batter made 43 runs off just 24 balls with the help of three fours and four gigantic sixes. With his explosive knock, Venkatesh bestowed an initial boost to his side.
