Brief Scores: DC 159/7 (Powell 43, Pant 39, Bumrah 3/25) lost to MI 160/5 (Kishan 48, David 34, Thakur 2/32) by 5 wickets
Player of the Match: Jasprit Bumrah (3/25)
After 56 days and 68 matches on the trot, the Indian Premier League (IPL) fans still awaited the final entrant into the top four of Tata IPL 2022. A satellite image indicated a swarm of the blue jerseys in the western and south-western parts of India, as Bangalore’s #PlayBold turned into #OneFamily of Mumbai to support the Mumbai Indians (MI) in an attempt to sneak into the playoffs.
On the other hand, it was almost a virtual eliminator for the Delhi Capitals (DC). Whether it will be Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) or DC was to be decided after the 69th match of the tournament, where DC took on Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Head-to-head, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have fought hard in the 31 matches they have encountered each other prior to this game. Mumbai had won 16, while Delhi had won 15 matches.
The coin flipped in Mumbai’s favour as the five-time IPL champions decided to have a bowl first as the chasing team had won three out of the last four games played at this venue. Dewald Brevis and Hrithik Shokeen were back in the eleven for Mumbai. For the Capitals, Prithvi Shaw was back after recovering from typhoid.
MI edge out DC to let RCB have the last laugh
Mumbai began with seam on a wicket laced with a tinge of moisture, after a light drizzle at Wankhede Stadium. The Capitals’ openers had been struggling during the last five innings, as their last six opening partnerships read: 0, 5, 0, 16, 0 and 0. It was no different this time around as David Warner, who was facing Daniel Sams for the first time ever in T20s, was dismissed off the second delivery he faced from Sams.
Delhi’s opening partnership has failed to score above 30 against Mumbai Indians since 2020. The last 8 opening stands for Delhi against Mumbai were: 4, 1, 0, 0, 11, 14, 30 and 21 (on Saturday). Jasprit Bumrah then took over from Sams and took two wickets in two overs, dismissing Mitchell Marsh and Prithvi Shaw with two absolute peach of deliveries.
After hitting a six with a handsome pull shot off Bumrah, Sarfaraz Khan was dismissed too, and within the blink of an eye, Delhi were 55/4 at the halfway stage. This was also DC’s lowest score this season at the 10-over mark, with their other lowest coming against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) where they managed 73/2 at that point.
Rishabh Pant and Rovman Powell then stitched a crucial 44-ball 75 run stand and rescued DC from a precarious 50/4 to 125/5 at the end of the 16th over. Both Pant and Powell were dismissed soon after, and a cameo from Axar Patel helped DC post a target of 160 runs for MI.
The ball was swinging for DC under the lights and Mumbai started the run chase quite cautiously as their captain took 10 deliveries to get off the mark. The struggling Rohit was dismissed in the powerplay. Then, Brevis and Kishan took charge and managed a 37-ball 51 run partnership. Kishan had the upper hand in his matchup against Kuldeep, as the former had scored 46 runs in the 24 balls he faced off Kuldeep and was dismissed only once. Kuldeep got the better of Ishan this time and avenged with a wicket.
Mumbai Indians needed 68 runs in the final six overs, requiring more than 11 runs per over. Tim David’s, hurricane innings of 34 shifted the balance of the game in a matter of two overs and ensured Delhi’s scheduled flight to Kolkata was aborted even before it took off.

“Jassi jaisa koi nahin” – Jasprit Bumrah bowls a fiery 4-0-25-3 spell
Jasprit Bumrah had a nightmare of a match when Mumbai faced Delhi in their previous encounter this season, as he was smashed for 43 runs in 3.2 overs and remained wicketless. This was Bumrah’s chance of redemption, and boy! He made it count.
Coming to bowl inside the powerplay, Bumrah picked up a wicket with the second delivery of his opening spell. Mitchell Marsh had never ever faced Bumrah before Saturday’s game in T20s and got out on the first-ever ball facing Bumrah. A perfect Test match delivery for Marsh, as the ball angled away from a good length, took a thick edge of Marsh’s bat on its way through, and the diving Rohit at first slip took a fine low catch towards his right.
The free-flowing Prithvi Shaw, who usually plays at a strike rate of 150+ had a rather poor match against Bumrah. In the 14 balls he faced from Bumrah, Shaw’s strike rate was only 78.6. Mumbai capitalised on this match-up and penetrated with Bumrah, and Jasprit didn’t disappoint. The pacer bowled an absolute rip snorter of a bouncer to Prithvi, who tried to evade it but forgot to get his hands down; the ball ballooned in the air and Ishan Kishan completed the formalities with the gloves.
Bumrah was breathing fire at the Wankhede, as the death over specialist came back in the 19th over to dismiss Rovman Powell with a jaffa of a yorker. It was full and fast, right in the popping crease, Powell was late to bring his bat down and the ball sneaked underneath the bat to strike timber. Bumrah’s three-wicket economical spell helped MI restrict DC to under 160 runs.

Pant-Powell rescue Delhi with 75-run stand
When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and the tough blokes of DC were at the crease. Delhi needed a stable partnership to post a respectable total on the board with their last proper batters, Pant and Powell, in the middle. Rishabh Pant and Rovman Powell both curbed all their attacking instincts and took only calculated risks against some tight bowling from the Mumbai bowlers. Powell started stretching his arms after being set and dismissed the Mumbai spinners out of the park, while the non-striker Pant was playing second fiddle with a good sense of strike rotation.
After a 19-run blast against Ramandeep in the 16th over, Pant was dismissed on the ‘ninth delivery’ of the over, which really seemed like a never-ending exercise. DC’s ship and their playoff hopes almost sank when they were 54/4. If it wasn’t for these 43 balls and 75 runs, the rescue partnership between Powell and Pant, Delhi would have struggled to get even a 140+ total on the board.

Tim David’s 11-ball 34 sent the ball from Mumbai straight to Bengaluru
Coming into bat with 65 runs needed off the final 33 balls with the required run rate pegged at almost 11 runs per over, Tim David nicked the first ball he faced, but Rishabh Pant didn’t hear it as the RCB fans, oops, rather the Mumbai Indians fans were shouting at the top of their lungs.
David made Delhi pay heavily for that favour, as he just changed the course of the match in the nine deliveries he faced before being dismissed. He hit a massive 97-metre six in the very same over he walked into bat. Mumbai still needed 46 runs off 4 overs at almost 11.8 runs in each over. David then stroked three sixes on the bounce, one against Khaleel and two against Thakur.
In fact, one of those sixes left the bat in Mumbai and landed in Bengaluru much to the delight of the Bangalore fans. David striked at 309.09 in this match, and his impactful 11-ball 34 shifted the match in Mumbai’s favour, much to the delight of RCB as the southern franchise have qualified for the playoffs where they play LSG in the Eliminator at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on May 25.
