Star batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has been dropped from India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka, which starts on July 27. The right-hander failed to make it to India’s squad for the three T20Is and as many ODIs after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the 15-member squads for the two formats on Thursday, July 18.

Gaikwad has consistently performed well whenever given the opportunity, yet he was not even considered as a backup opener for the T20I series in Sri Lanka. Interestingly, Riyan Parag has been selected, despite having a poor run during the Zimbabwe tour. Ruturaj has been prolific in his last seven T20I innings, averaging an awe-inspiring 71.20 at an impressive strike rate of 158.70. However, that didn’t prove to be enough for him to seal a spot in India’s new-look side.

The CSK captain, who led India to the 2023 Asian Games gold, scored 133 runs in his three innings during the T20I series in Zimbabwe. He was the fourth-highest leading run-scorer in the series. He scored 7, 77*, and 49 in three innings throughout the series, playing four matches before being rested for the final game.

Overall, Gaikwad has 633 runs in 23 T20Is at a strike rate of 143.53, including a century and four 50s. In ODIs, he has failed to deliver for the ‘Men in Blue’, scoring 115 runs in six matches at a poor average of 19.16, including a solitary half-century.

What led to Gaikwad’s exclusion from the India squad?

The young cricket sensation has found himself in a puzzling predicament despite his outstanding performances on the field. His exclusion could be a result of tough competition for spots in the team. The top and middle order are Gaikwad’s preferred positions in the team. However, these slots in the Indian cricket team have long been a battleground for talent, with players vying to cement their place and make a mark on the international stage.

With all players making themselves available for the selection, it is very difficult for Ruturaj Gaikwad to find a place in the team. In the cut-throat competition for the pivotal no. 3 to 5 positions in the India squad, Gaikwad faces stiff competition from seasoned players and rising stars like Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube.

Ruturaj’s exclusion comes at a time when the top order of India’s team is witnessing a significant shift, with players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill solidifying their positions. They have cemented their places in the India squad with impressive performances in the top order which made it difficult for Gaikwad to make his place in the team.

What does the future hold for him?

Known for his elegant stroke play and composure at the crease, Gaikwad has shown promise and potential in the cricketing arena. However, his recent exclusion from the India squad for the Sri Lanka tour has raised questions about his future in international cricket.

One avenue for Ruturaj Gaikwad to showcase his talent is by actively participating in domestic cricket tournaments. Dominating the domestic circuit will not only boost his confidence but also catch the selectors’ attention for a potential national team return. The right-handed batter’s skills and experience make him a valuable asset in domestic cricket. For him, the road back to the national team may involve consistent stellar performances.

In conclusion, Gaikwad’s exclusion from the India squad may mark a temporary setback in his career, but it also signifies a crucial juncture for growth and development. By utilising the opportunities in domestic cricket and focusing more on his techniques and skills, he can pave the way for a successful comeback and solidify his position in the national team.
