Brief Scores: India 376 and 287/4 declared vs Bangladesh 149 and 234 (Najmul Hossain Shanto 82, R Ashwin 6/88) by 280 runs.

On Sunday, Ravichandran Ashwin’s 37th five-wicket haul helped India beat Bangladesh in the Chennai Test. The win gave India a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series. Needing to take six wickets on the fourth day, India’s all-rounders Ashwin and Jadeja took all the wickets to fall. Ashwin was named man of the match, and apart from the five-wicket haul, he also scored a vital 113 in the first innings to rescue India.

Talking Points: Match exposes the wide divide between the two teams

The Chennai Test exposed the wide divide between the two teams, especially the bowling unit. India have lethal new-ball bowlers in Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who exploited the conditions in the first innings to bowl out Bangladesh for 149. India’s spinners, Ashwin and Jadeja, are also poles apart from Bangladesh’s spinners. Ashwin-Jadeja’s experience and skills got the better of Bangladesh batters even when conditions were batting-friendly in the fourth innings.

Ashwin-Jadeja kills Bangladesh’s resistance

Bangladesh began Day 4, needing 357 for a win but with just six wickets. Their skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan survived a testing first hour, keeping India’s new-ball bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj at bay. Things changed for India after the drinks break as Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja got together to break the resistance of the Bangladesh batters.

Shakib was the first to depart after Yashasvi Jaiswal took a blinder with a short leg off Ashwin. Jadeja got them into the act, getting the dangerous Litton Das to edge it to the first slip. Mehidy Hasan Miraz threw his wicket away, trying to clear long-on, but holed out in the deep, giving Ashwin his fifth wicket of the innings. Captain Shanto, who was running out of the partners, was the next to fall to Jadeja. Ashwin took his sixth when he dismissed Taskin Ahmed. Jadeja then bowled Hasan Mahmud to end Bangladesh’s resistance.
