Ind 1st team to play 1000 ODIs with game against WI in Ahmedabad: Milestones in India’s ODI journey

Let’s relive the records India registered in the journey of 1000 ODI games.

India will become the first team to play 1000 ODI matches when they take field against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in the first of a three-match ODI series. Australia and Pakistan follow India with 958 and 936 ODIs, respectively.

In India’s journey of 1000 ODI matches, we have seen many peaks like two World Cup wins, two Champions Trophy wins, the only edition of World Championship of Cricket in 1985 which featured all the then Test-playing nations besides a stunning victory in Commonwealth Bank series in 2008 in Australia. Also, we have seen few low points like elimination in the first round of World Cups held in 1975, 1979, 1992 and 2007.

In India’s ODI history, players like Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble and Ajit Agarkar lit up the stage at the global level for their team. Let’s have a look at some spectacular records India registered in this journey of 1000 ODI games.

1st Match – India played their first ODI in 1974 against England in Leeds under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar. This was a 55-over game. India lost the game by four wickets but impressed fans with their performance as they notched up a commendable score of 265 batting first.

1st Capped Player – Opening bowler in the first ODI match, Syed Abid Ali was the first capped Indian player.

1st Fifty – Skipper Ajit Wadekar became the first Indian player to strike a half-century in ODI cricket in India’s first ODI match only.

1st Win – India managed to register their first win in their fourth ODI match against East Africa by 10 wickets in Leeds under the captaincy of Srinivas Venkataraghavan.

1st Century – It took nine years for an India player to register a century in ODI cricket. Kapil Dev, India skipper in 1983 World Cup, hammered an explosive 175* against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells. This was also the highest individual score in ODI cricket at that time.

1st Series Win – India won their first ODI series in 1981-82 against England by 2-1 under the leadership of Sunil Gavaskar. This series was played in India.

1st Away Series Win – India secured the first away series win in ODI cricket against England in 1990 under the captaincy of Mohammed Azharuddin. India won the two-match series by a margin of 2-0.

2 World Cup Wins – In their 48 years of ODI history, India have won ODI World Cup twice – first in 1983 and second in 2011 – under the leadership of Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni, respectively.

1 World Championship of Cricket Win – India have won the only World Championship of Cricket held in 1985 under the leadership of Sunil Gavaskar. This tournament had all the seven then Test-playing nations – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, England, New Zealand and West Indies. India beat Pakistan in the Final held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) by eight wickets.

2 ICC Champions Trophy Wins – India have won two ICC Champions Trophies – first in 2002 (shared with Sri Lanka) and second in 2013 – under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni, respectively.

1st Player to hit 10,000 ODI Runs – Indian stalwart Sachin Tendulkar became the first player in the world to amass 10,000 runs in ODI cricket in 2001 during his knock of 139 runs against Australia in Indore.

1st Player to hit 200 – Sachin Tendulkar made a habit of setting new records in his whole career. In 2008, Sachin became the first man on the planet to score a double ton in ODIs against South Africa in Gwalior. The record for the first double hundred in ODI cricket rests with Australia’s Belinda Clarke who made 229 in Mumbai against Denmark in the Women’s World Cup 1997-98.

1st Hat-trick – India pacer Chetan Sharma became the first player from his country to take a hat-trick in ODI cricket, in 1987 against New Zealand. It was also the first hat-trick in the ODI World Cup.

1st Hat-trick by an India spinner – In 2017, Chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav became the first India spinner to take a hat-trick in ODI cricket against Australia at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Most Runs -18426 scored by Sachin Tendulkar – India batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar has a record of scoring the most number of runs in ODI cricket, he has a staggering and almost unsurpassable haul of 18,426 runs from 463 ODI games.

Most Centuries – 49 hundreds struck by Sachin Tendulkar – Sachin Tendulkar also has a record of smashing the most number of centuries in ODI cricket (49). Another India player Virat Kohli follows him with 43 tons in 257 ODI games.

Most Wickets – Anil Kumble has the record of most number of ODI wickets (337) among India’s players. Javagal Srinath follows him with 315 wickets in 229 ODI games.

Most 200s – India opener Rohit Sharma scored three double tons in ODI cricket which is a world record for any player.

Most 150s – Rohit Sharma has scored 150-plus score eight times in ODI cricket, which is a world record. Australia opener David Warner follows him with six 150-plus scores in ODIs.

Highest individual Score – 264 registered by Rohit Sharma – Rohit Sharma has registered the highest individual score in ODI cricket of 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2014. Kiwi opener Martin Guptill has the record of scoring the second-highest ODI score (237) after Rohit Sharma’s 264.

Best bowling figures – 6-4 taken by Stuart Binny – India all-rounder Stuart Binny recorded the best bowling figures for any India player – 6 wickets conceding only four runs against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2014.

Highest Total – 418 – India amassed their highest ODI total against West Indies in Indore in 2011 – 418 for five in which India skipper Virendra Sehwag struck his only double century in ODI cricket (219).

Lowest Total – 54 – India registered their lowest ODI score (54) against Sri Lanka in Sharjah in 2000.

Fastest to 10,000 runs – India’s former skipper Virat Kohli became the fastest player to amass 10,000 runs in just 213 ODI games. He reached 10,000 ODI runs in just 10 years and 67 days from the day he started out in his ODI career.

Fastest to 50 wickets – Former India player Ajit Agarkar became the fastest player to bag the first 50 ODI wickets in the world in just 182 days. Also, he is the second-fastest to achieve 50 ODI wickets in terms of matches, in just 23 ODI games after Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis who took his first 50 ODI wickets in just 19 ODI matches.

Fastest Century by an India player – India’s iconic player Virat Kohli hammered the fastest century off just 52 balls among India’s players against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.

Fastest India player to take 100 wickets – Mohammed Shami became the fastest among India players to take 100 ODI wickets in just 56 matches in an ODI against New Zealand in Napier in 2019.

Fastest India spinner to take 100 wickets – Among India’s spinners, Kuldeep Yadav became the fastest player to bag 100 ODI wickets, a feat he achieved in just 58 matches, He reached the milestone in an ODI against Australia in Rajkot in 2020.
