Brief Scores: England 246 (Mooen 47, Willey 41, Chahal 4-47) beat India 146 (Hardik 29, Jadeja 29, Topley 6-24) by 100 runs

Player of the Match: Reece Topley (6-24)

After a commendable all-round performance in the first ODI, India looked to bag the three-match series during the second ODI at the iconic home of cricket, Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Thursday.

The year was 2004 when India won an ODI game at Lord’s for the last time.

India captain Rohit Sharma, on winning the toss, opted to field on a track which didn’t have the same amount of grass like the first ODI. While England retained their same eleven from the first ODI, India brought back fit Virat Kohli in place of Shreyas Iyer.

Splendid England level series with 100-run victory

Put in to bat first, both openers, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow took England to 41/0, before Roy lost his wicket to a gentle loose ball from Hardik Pandya. India made a great return in that phase picking up the big fishes and reduced the home side to 102/5 in the 22nd over, before Liam Livingstone too lost his wicket.

There was a 62-run partnership between Mooen Ali and David Willey for the seventh wicket to recover England at the end. But for the second time in consecutive ODIs, England failed to play their full 50 overs, getting bundled out for 246.

India were never in the chase, losing wickets heavily early on being diminished to 31/4 in just the 12th over. After an enterprising 27, Suryakumar Yadav too walked back as India were limping on 73/5. There was no significant partnership at any phase as England made strikes at regular intervals. India were finally bundled out for 146 as England levelled the series 1-1 with a 100-run win.

Let’s scan the top three performances from the second ODI between England and India.

Cunning Chahal puzzled England with figures of 4-47

England, even after losing their opener inside the first 10 overs, were going at a pretty strong rate when Yuzvendra Chahal was introduced into the attack.

The prime India leg spinner on his tenth ball cleaned up Jonny Bairstow with a tossed up delivery outside leg. Bairstow, on 38, going for a huge slog sweep, saw the furniture being disturbed. This was the first time Chahal had the better of Bairstow in ODI cricket.

In his very next over, with another nicely looped up delivery, Chahal trapped Joe Root before the wicket on a personal score of 11. Root too went for a slog sweep and missed the straight ball as Chahal picked his second.

England kept on losing wickets as Chahal got rid of dangerous Ben Stokes, who going for a reverse sweep, was adjudged LBW thanks to a slow drifting delivery that turned away to hit Stokes’ back leg.

Coming back into the attack in the 42nd over, Chahal dealt yet another crucial strike as with a slow delivery, he sent back good-looking Moeen Ali on 47, who in an attempt to go for a huge six, died in the hands of Ravindra Jadeja stationed at deep mid-wicket.

Chahal finished with 4-47 in 10 overs, which are now the best bowling figures in ODIs for an Indian at Lord’s. Chahal also became the first leg spinner to take a four-wicket haul in an ODI at Lord’s since Shane Warne in ICC ODI World Cup 1999.

Resplendent Topley punctured India at the top with a record haul of 6-24

Depending on an average total of 246, England required some breakthroughs and Reece Topley, who has been an irregular member of the England side because of his different types of injuries, stood out with an impressive performance.

After a maiden over to begin with, Topley caged opposition captain Rohit Sharma on a 10-ball duck thanks to a full delivery that nipped back to hit the back pad of Rohit as the umpire raised his finger without a second thought.

Topley kept on asking questions to Shikhar Dhawan bowling in the good length areas but eventually got the better of the left-hander on 9 with a leg side ball to which Dhawan, in an attempt to earn a boundary, got a faint edge to the keeper. This was the second time Topley had Dhawan’s number in ODIs.

Coming back in the 21st over, the left-arm lanky bowler from Surrey, sent back good-looking Suryakumar Yadav, who notched up a T20 century in the third T20I against England few days back. SKY, trying to cut a short ball, chopped on to his stumps on a personal score of 27.

Mohammed Shami was playing a cameo at the end and Topley foxed him with a slower ball. Shami spooned it in the air as Stokes grabbed an easy catch. Later, disturbing the stumps of Yuzvendra Chahal with a good length ball, Topley picked his maiden ODI five-wicket haul.

Topley became just the second England bowler after Darren Gough to pick up a five-for in men’s ODIs at Lord’s. He added Prasidh Krishna in the wickets tally to finish with 6-24 in his 9.5 overs. These are also the best bowling figures for England in ODIs.

All-round Willey made a majestic contribution

England had lost their sixth wicket on 148 when David Willey walked in to the middle. With Mooen Ali, he began to stich a partnership; Willey was given a life on 1 when Prasidh Krishna dropped him at fine leg.

Willey threw some salt in the wounds, smashing Krishna for a six in the same region before smashing Bumrah for a four. He whacked the prime Indian bowler for a six again before being caught at 41. That knock in 49 balls helped England get to 246.

With ball in hand, Willey began with two consecutive maidens before having figures of 0-6 in his first five overs. He polished his numbers more when he found the edge of Virat Kohli’s bat on 16, as Buttler made no mistake behind the stumps. Willey finished with 1-27 in his nine overs.

What’s to Come

The third ODI of the series is going to be held on July 17 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
