Brief Scores: England 110 (Buttler 30, Willey 21, Bumrah 6-19, Shami 3-31) lost to India 114-0 (Rohit 76, Dhawan 31, Topley 0-22) by 10 wickets
Player of the Match – Jasprit Bumrah for 6-19
After dominating England in T20Is by a margin of 2-1, India moved on to the last stage of the their 2022 tour of England, for a three match ODI series.
The first match of the series was played at the Kennington Oval in London on Tuesday. Head-to-head, India and England have faced each other in 103 matches in ODIs. Out of these 103 games, India have won 55 whereas England have come out victorious on 43 occasions. Three matches ended without a result while two matches have been tied between the old rivals.
India won the toss and elected to bowl first to exploit the green-tinged wicket topped with the cloudy conditions at The Oval. One big change in India’s line-up was the absence of Virat Kohli as he suffered a groin strain. Shreyas Iyer replaced Virat Kohli in India’s eleven. England went on with a batter and all-rounder heavy line-up, with 10 out of their 11 players having the capability to bat.
England fold up for 110; India bulldoze target by 10 wickets
Right from ball one, the spectators and England batters got glimpses of what was to come in this match – Swing! Swing! And lots of Swing! The new white ball swung far more than the red Dukes ball used in the Test matches this summer.
Jasprit Bumrah gave India a perfect start with a double wicket maiden over in the second over of the match, dismissing Jason Roy and the Player of the Series in Pataudi Trophy 2021, Joe Root for ducks. Mohammed Shami wasn’t just going to sit there and watch Bumrah have all the fun as he bounced with a wicket in the very next over, dismissing England’s red ball captain, Ben Stokes, for a golden duck. The Oval serves delicious duck curry and England batters helped the caterers by serving ducks on the field with four out of their top six being dismissed for zero.
This was only the second time that England had three ducks among the top four in an ODI; the previous instance being – Roy, Jonny Bairstow and Root against Australia in 2018. England’s Bazball approach was at the receiving end on Tuesday, as none of the batters tried to apply themselves and rotate strike the old-fashioned way. At the end of the 14th over, England were 53-6 and were at the risk of making their lowest-ever ODI score (86 vs Australia).
However, David Willey and Brydon Carse provided England with some crucial runs as they both put on a 35-run partnership for the 9th wicket (the highest of England’s innings) to take their side beyond the 100-run mark. Bumrah came back with toe-crushing yorkers to bundle out England for 110 runs. This was only the sixth time for India that all opposition wickets were taken by seamers.
If knocking England out for 110 wasn’t enough already, India reached 111 without losing a single wicket. A 50-overs-a-side contest didn’t even last a total of 50 overs. This was meant to be a day-nighter or rather a T20I! Rohit Sharma is a pro at bossing such small chases with his aggressive approach to just stamp the opposition out of the contest, and he did just that on Tuesday.
England’s bowlers were extremely keen to bowl short to him despite the ball seaming around, and Rohit just kept smoking them into the stands over fine leg for fun. Shikhar Dhawan, who is now playing just the ODI format, which is the rarest of the three, was scratchy at the start owing to his lack of match time, but then steadied himself towards the end as he found his timing. England bowlers were scratching their head, struggling to pick wickets. As Rohit-Dhawan thumped England inside 20 overs, this was the first instance of England losing a home ODI by a 10-wicket margin.
Let’s scan the top three performances from the first ODI between England and India played at the Kennington Oval in London.
BWWWm BWWWm Bumrah breaks England’s spike with a 6-fer
Jasprit Bumrah probably had bananas for breakfast, as he got the new ball swinging like the tropical fruit. It all started in the second over of the match, where Bumrah bamboozled Jason Roy. He set up Roy with an away swinger, followed by an in-dipper and again an away swinger only to be chased by the latter on an in-swinger wide outside off stump, close to the tramline. Roy could only manage a thick inside edge which then toppled on to the stumps. Before Tuesday’s match, Roy had never been dismissed off the 35 deliveries faced from Bumrah.
Bumrah bowled an absolute rip snorter to Joe Root which bounced a bit extra from short of good length; Root ended up poking it to the wicketkeeper for a two-ball duck. Root’s match-up against Bumrah in ODIs was fairly poor to begin with, as the former had been dismissed twice with a below par average of 18 against Bumrah.
The dangerous Jonny Bairstow who averages just 10 and strikes at just 29.4 against Bumrah was Jassi’s third wicket. This was more of Pant’s wicket as he plucked the catch out of thin air diving to his right. Bumrah’s best ball came against Liam Livingstone who was clearly struggling to get bat onto ball. Trying to play against the run of play, Livingstone charged down the wicket while exposing all three of his stumps. Bumrah bowled a banana in-swinging yorker which went right down Livingstone’s legs as he tried to flick it on the leg side and the stumps were rattled all over the place. With this, Bumrah became only the third Indian bowler after Javagal Srinath and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to take four wickets in the first 10 overs for India in ODIs since 2002.
Bumrah then came back in the 24th over to again provide a wicket maiden, where he clean bowled Brydon Carse to complete his five-fer. This was a typical Bumrah wicket, full and straight, smashing right into the middle stump. The sixth wicket for Bumrah was that of David Willey as the latter was castled by a full yorker.
Jasprit broke the record for the best bowling figures in ODIs by an India bowler in England, usurping Kuldeep Yadav’s 6-25 against England in Nottingham in 2018. Bumrah also registered the third-best figures by an India bowler in ODIs, now only behind Stuart Binny (6-4) and Anil Kumble (6-12). He joined the elite list of 10 India bowlers to have picked six wickets in an innings in ODIs.

Shami’s 3-fer silences critics
Bumrah’s partner in crime was Mohammed Shami who was instrumental in dismantling England’s top-order. Prior to Tuesday’s game, Shami had never dimissed Ben Stokes in ODIs and had went at a strike rate of 182.6. Shami bowled a typical upright seam up delivery on a good length which nipped back in to take Stoke’s inside edge on the way and Rishabh Pant, who was busy behind the wicket, took a blinder one-handed catch diving to his right.
Shami’s match-up against England captain, Jos Buttler is well known. Shami has dismissed Buttler three times in 48 deliveries prior to Tuesday’s game. A well set up short delivery which Buttler tried to pull but the smartly planted Suryakumar Yadav took a cool and calm catch on the edge of the boundary ropes. With this wicket, Shami became the fourth-fastest bowler to take 150 wickets (81 matches) and fastest-ever for India, breaking Agarkar’s record (97 ODIs). Craig Overton was just too ordinary for a Shami in-swinger which pitched on good length and came back in sharply to dismantle the stumps.

Rohit-Dhawan – The Jai-Viru of India’s batting
With just 111 to chase down, Rohit Sharma was in his T20 shoes from two days ago. Smashing boundaries at will, the comeback king, Shikhar Dhawan, who was playing an ODI almost after a year, was struggling and took his time, while Rohit clobbered the bowlers all round the park.
In this innings, the Rohit-Dhawan duo completed 5,000 runs batting together and became only the fourth opening pair to do so in ODIs. Only Sourav Ganguly-Sachin Tendulkar (6,609), Adam Gilchrist-Matthew Hayden (5,372) and Gordon Greenidge-Desmond Haynes (5,150) have more runs at the top of the order in ODIs than Rohit-Dhawan.
England bowlers were targeting Rohit with short deliveries, and Rohit who is known to play the hook and the pull shots really well, was just pulling the shots off in some style scoring almost 65 per cent of his runs backward of square leg.
India brought up their 100 in the 18th over without losing a single wicket and with this Rohit-Dhawan became the fourth duo registered a century opening partnership the 18th time in ODIs. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma also grabbed the record of scoring four century partnership at a single venue. Rohit hit 5 sixes in this match and became the first India batter to hit 250+ sixes in ODI cricket. India chased the total down without even dropping a single drop of sweat and completely outplayed England.
