CWC 2023, BAN vs SL: Shanto-Shakib 169 run stand proves to be definitive; SL knocked out

CWC 2023, Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka: Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 90, Charith Asalanka’s 108 and Shakib Al Hasan’s 82 & 2-57 are top performances. Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka and end Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign.

Brief Scores: BAN 282/7 (Shanto 90, Shakib 82, Madushanka 3/69) beat SL 279 (Asalanka 108, Nissanka 41, Tanzim 3/80) by 3-wickets.

Player of the Match: Shakib Al Hasan (82 & 2/57)

The game could be remembered for Angelo Matthew’s ‘timed-out’ dismissal, but Bangladesh showed courage with the ball to restrict Sri Lanka’s par total. They also batted sensibly and used the batting-friendly conditions to bounce back from their six-match losing streak.

Sri Lanka came into this game after their heavy defeat against semi-finalist India, while Bangladesh had already been eliminated from the tournament thanks to their six consecutive losses. Both teams met each other at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi at CWC 2023.

In four head-to-head encounters, Sri Lanka has three wins, with one game ending as a washout.

Talking point: Top order’s continuous failure stresses Sri Lanka

The top order has failed enormously for Sri Lanka. None of Dimuth Karunaratne or Kusal Perera has looked to be in any touch throughout this tournament. Kusal Mendis began the competition strongly, but since taking on leadership duties, he has gone downstairs with the bat in hand.

Energetic Bangladesh ends long losing streak with three-wicket win

On a good batting surface, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, on winning the toss, opted to field first. Sri Lanka brought back Dhananjaya de Silva and Kushal Perera, while unfit Mustafizur Rahman made way for Tanzim Sakib.

Sri Lanka lost Perera in the first over but recovered well with few decent partnerships. The 63-run fourth wicket stand took them to 137/5 in 25 overs, as Angelo Matthews was given a ‘timed-out.’ Charith Asalanka stood there almost till the end, with his 108-run knock shouldered Sri Lanka to 279 all-out in 49.3 overs.

Bangladesh struggled at the top to be reduced to 41/2 before the 169-run third-wicket partnership carried them to 210/3 in 32 overs. Suddenly, they slipped to 269/7 in the 41st over before reaching the target with three wickets.

Captain Shakib led from the front with 2/57 & 82-run knock

Captain Shakib Al Hasan entered this game under pressure and had to come out with a vital match-winning knock. With the ball, he picked up the wickets of Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama to end with 2/57 in 10 overs.

Even with the bat, he looked confident. Shakib pulled Chameera through backward square leg for a four after hooking the bowler to fine leg for a six. He swept Theekshana for back-to-back fours before guiding Madushanka to deep backward square for another boundary. He recorded his 47-ball fifty with a streaky boundary to third man.

He nailed Rajitha for a six over a short, fine leg before treating him for two consecutive fours. He was finally dismissed on 82 in 65 balls with 12 fours and a couple of sixes, to have now 7570 ODI runs and 317 wickets in 247 games.

Calm Shanto punished SL bowlers with 90 run knock

Najmul Hasan Shanto has been a standout performer for Bangladesh recently, but he was a little short of runs before this evening. He flicked Dilshan Madushanka past mid-wicket for a four before driving Dushmantha Chameera straight down the ground for another boundary. After creaming Kasun Rajitha for two consecutive fours, Shanto notched up his 58-ball fifty.

He swept de Silva for a boundary to short fine leg before punishing Rajitha through mid-wicket for another boundary. He was finally dismissed on 90 in 101 balls, shouldering on 12 fours, to now have 1085 runs in 38 games.
