Ashes 2021-22 Records: Eng equalise B’desh’s dubious record of losing 9 Tests in a calendar year

Australia defeated England by an innings and 14 runs in the third Test in the prestigious 2021-22 Ashes Test series; also they won the Ashes series by 3-0, even before the last two Test matches having been completed. Many records were broken in this Test at Melbourne.

Let’s take a look at some of the vital records broken at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

9 – England equalised the world record held by Bangladesh of losing nine Tests in a calendar year, in 2021. Bangladesh became the first team to lose nine Tests in a calendar year, in 2003. England have lost eight Test matches in a calendar year four times in the past – in 1984, 1986, 1993 and 2016.

68 – England got all-out on 68 in the second innings of the Melbourne Test against Australia, which is the 13th lowest Test score registered by England.

39 – England have now been bundled out under 100 on 39 occasions in Test cricket, which is the most for any Test team. They surpassed Australia (38) while achieving this unfortunate record.

1 – Joe Root is the first-ever player in Tests to score 1000 or more runs than the next highest scoring teammate in a year. The previous highest difference between the top two run-getters from a team in a calendar year was 881 runs between Vivian Richards (1710) and Roy Fredericks (829) in 1976.

12 – Joe Root top-scored in a Test innings 12 times in 2021, which is a record for any Test player in a calendar year. The previous record-holder was Graeme Smith, who top-scored 11 times in a Test innings for South Africa in 2008.

8 – Australia have secured the urn by the end of the third Test, eighth time in the last nine Ashes Test series at home.

5Scott Boland became the fifth player to win the Player of the Match award on Test debut in 2021 after Kyle Mayers, Praveen Jayawickrama, Devon Conway, Shreyas Iyer and Scott Boland.

1 – Scott Boland conceded the fewest runs (7) while taking a fifer on Test debut. Previous record holders were Charles Turner and Vernon Philander, who conceded 15 runs in their Test debuts while taking a fifer.

8 – Scott Boland took the eighth cheapest five-for in Test cricket. Australia’s Ernie Toshack holds the record of the cheapest five-wicket haul in Test cricket – 5/2 against India in 1947-48.

168 – James Anderson has played 168 Test matches till now. With this, he has equalised Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting in terms of the number of Tests played. Only Sachin Tendulkar has played more Test matches (200) than Anderson, Waugh and Ponting.

2 – Nathan Lyon is only the second off-spinner after Muthiah Muralitharan to take 400-plus wickets, score 1000-plus runs and take 50-plus catches in Test cricket.

9 – Joe Root now has nine fifties in Australia – the most by any visitor without making a Test century.

1 – Joe Root now has 1708 Test runs in 2021 – the most by a Test captain in a calendar year. Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith (1656) held the previous record in 2008.

3 – Joe Root’s run tally of 1708 is the third highest in a calendar year for any player in Test cricket after Md Yousuf (1788) and Vivian Richards (1710).
